Dear North America Food Systems Advocate,
The United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth (UNMGCY), is the UN General Assembly-mandated, official, formal and self-organized mechanism for young people to meaningfully engage in the UN. We act as a bridge between young people and the UN system in order to ensure that their right to meaningful participation is realized. We do so by engaging formal and informal communities of young people, in the design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up, and review of sustainable development policies at all levels. Global Focal Points and Regional Focal Points from different constituencies within UNMGCY are working together to facilitate meaningful youth engagement in the lead up to the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS). I am Vanessa Garcia Polanco, from the USA I have been designated as the North America Regional Youth Focal in support at the UNFSS. The UN Secretary-General has called for this Food Systems Summit and engagement process to unleash the power of food to deliver progress on all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Over the year, the Summit’s activities will call on a diverse range of participants — including youth activists, indigenous leaders, smallholder farmers, scientists, health professionals, and CEOs — to identify the most powerful ways to make our food systems stronger and more equitable.
