Introducing the Food Solutions New England Campaign for Climate Resilience

What role does the food system play in building climate resilience? What does climate resilience even mean?

For Food Solutions New England (FSNE), a truly climate-resilient food system is, by its very nature, an equitable one where trends toward consolidation are reversed and a Just Transition is pursued to co-create a future for everyone, not just those with access to resources and power. These principles, grounded in the pursuit of health for people and planet together, are mutually reinforcing and incredibly expansive.

While we recognize that this is no easy task, we do believe it’s a possible one. It will require targeting power structures at every level, innumerable contributions across sectors, and, most importantly, policy solutions grounded in the communities most impacted. There is an acute need for as many voices as possible to step in, where they can, to demand and pursue a Just Transition. Whether it’s grounding their work in the framework of a Just Transition affirmed in 2015 Paris Agreement, lending resources – time, money, networks, or voice – to Farm Bill advocacy, state-level policy change, or local solutions right from the local community, all contributions are welcomed and needed.

That’s why it’s our hope to provide space, where needed and wanted, to help the expansive FSNE network plug in, be inspired, and lift up their own work in pursuit of climate resilience. We are grateful to work with and know of many (but not all) of the pieces coming together in this pursuit. From soil health and racial equity to land access and reparations and more, we seek to galvanize true solutions that inspire innovation, and we know that true solutions are made more powerful through networks.

Our Campaign for Climate Resilience will serve as a repository of stories, resources, campaigns, call-to-actions, issue briefs, and more. We will use this collection to further define the narrative of climate resilience to shift culture and understanding of what community-led solutions to some of the biggest issues are possible. It will act as the grounding to launch convenings, conversations, info sessions, and advocacy efforts. It’s our hope to make space and opportunity for people throughout New England to imagine, create, participate, and contribute to efforts to build climate resilience, through a Just Transition, in ways that work best for them and are grounded in the New England Food Vision and values.
